Mercury
Convertible
Story
The 1949 Mercury Convertible appeared on screen in the 1978 musical Grease as "Hell's Chariot" - but this time it isn't the hero's car, it's the villain's. It's the black, flame-painted machine driven by Danny Zuko's (John Travolta) rival, "Craterface," the leader of the Scorpions gang.
Behind this Mercury is the signature of master builder Eddie Paul. He started with a 1949 Mercury Custom, took off the roof, added orange-and-yellow flames to the black body and sharp blades to the wheels. In the Thunder Road race, one of the film's key moments, this is the Mercury that takes on Danny's "Greased Lightnin'" (a 1948 Ford Super De Luxe), pulling up alongside and trying to tear his rival's car apart.
